Top 10 Stocks We're Watching — Fed Week Edition

The watchlist is back for the most loaded week of the year: a Fed priced at ~90% to hike, $100 oil, record tanker rates, and gold at $4,400. Ten names split between short-term catalyst trades and long-term positions the macro is validating.

Top 10 Stocks We're Watching — Fed Week Edition

Our Top 10 watchlist is back, and it returns into one of the most loaded weeks of the year.

The Federal Reserve decides on rates Wednesday, September 16, and for the first time in this cycle the conversation is not about when the cuts come. It is about a hike. August CPI printed at 3.4% year over year with core prices running hot on the month, and markets went into the weekend pricing the odds of a hike near 90%. Wall Street spent two years positioned for easing. It is about to have the opposite conversation.

The reason is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent closed Friday at $104.61 and WTI at $100.05, both carrying a war premium as tanker traffic through the world's most important oil chokepoint takes fire. A commercial vessel was struck in the strait this weekend, and very large crude carrier freight rates hit all-time records on Friday, roughly $11.50 per barrel on the Gulf-to-China run, with war-risk insurance premiums up an order of magnitude from pre-conflict levels.

The rest of the tape reflects the squeeze: the 10-year Treasury yield closed near 4.98%, gold sits at $4,409, and the S&P 500 finished the week at 7,657 after four straight down sessions, about 2% off its high.

A tape like this rewards two kinds of buying, and this edition is split accordingly. Short-term names where the catalyst is live this week, and long-term names where the macro is actively validating the thesis while the stock trades well below its high. Each entry is labeled with its horizon.

All prices are Friday, September 11 closes, pulled live this weekend. Here are the ten names.

1. $FRO — Frontline plc

Friday close: $49.21 | Past week: +8.3% | 52-week range: $20.47 - $49.56 | Horizon: Short-term

Frontline is one of the world's largest publicly traded crude tanker owners, and it is the most direct equity expression of what is happening in the Gulf right now. VLCC spot rates hit the highest levels on record on Friday, around 450 Worldscale on the Gulf-to-China route, roughly $11.50 per barrel of pure freight, and war-risk premiums that used to cost about a quarter of a percent of hull value per transit are now quoted in the high single digits. Owners willing to load in the Gulf are naming their price, and refiners are paying it, because a shut refinery costs more than expensive freight.

The stock closed Friday within 35 cents of its 52-week high after an 8.3% week. That is not a discount entry, it is a momentum trade on a live catalyst: every additional day of Hormuz risk locks record spot fixtures into third and fourth quarter earnings, and tanker earnings at these rates compound faster than most investors appreciate.

Know what you own here. This trade works until the day a credible de-escalation headline crosses, and then it unwinds fast. Size it like a trade, not a position.

Watch for: Daily VLCC fixture reports and any ceasefire or escort-convoy headlines. Above the old high, pullbacks that hold the breakout level keep the trade alive. A genuine de-escalation is the exit signal, not a dip to buy.

2. $RTX — RTX Corporation

Friday close: $197.68 | Past week: -2.2% | 52-week range: $155.64 - $226.88 | Horizon: Long-term, with live headline support

RTX makes the Patriot air defense system, and Patriot is having the most publicly validating month in its history. Batteries in the Gulf have been intercepting live Iranian salvos for two weeks. And in a detail from Anthropic's new threat intelligence report that we covered in depth this week, a researcher linked to a Chinese military academy was caught building targeting software that specifically modeled Patriot engagement envelopes for a Taiwan scenario. Adversaries do not model systems that do not worry them.

Behind the headlines sits the structural story: NATO's European members and Canada raised core defense spending nearly 20% in 2025, the alliance has a 5% of GDP target with a 2035 deadline, and every intercepted salvo in the Gulf is drawing down interceptor stockpiles that will take years of production to rebuild. Munitions and air defense restocking is among the stickiest revenue in the defense complex.

The stock trades about 13% below its 52-week high after drifting down with the broader market this week, while the demand evidence moved the other way. That divergence is the entry argument.

Watch for: Interceptor and Patriot award announcements, backlog commentary, and Fed-week rotation into defensives. RTX has defensive characteristics on both meanings of the word.

3. $AEM — Agnico Eagle Mines

Friday close: $200.36 | Past week: -3.3% | 52-week range: $134.38 - $255.24 | Horizon: Both, and that is the point

Gold at $4,409 with the Fed about to hike is one of the most unusual macro configurations in decades. The textbook says rising real yields kill gold. Gold is holding above $4,400 anyway, because the bid is not a rates trade: it is central bank accumulation, de-dollarization flows, and a war hedge. Wednesday is the live experiment. If gold holds or rallies through an actual hike, the market will have confirmed that the old correlation is broken, and the re-rating math for miners changes.

Agnico Eagle is the quality operator in the senior gold space: mines concentrated in Canada, Finland, Australia, and Mexico, the lowest political-risk footprint among the majors, and a long record of per-share discipline. At spot prices far above the industry's all-in sustaining costs, every quarter at these gold prices is a margin event, and AEM trades roughly 22% below its 52-week high.

Short-term, it is a hedge into a binary Fed week. Long-term, it is the compounding expression of a world that keeps buying gold for reasons that have nothing to do with yield.

Watch for: Gold's reaction in the first hour after Wednesday's decision. Gold rallying through a hike is the green light this thesis has been waiting for. A sharp gold reversal on a hawkish surprise is the risk case, and miners move with roughly twice gold's beta in both directions.

Behind the paywall: the remaining seven names, including the oil supermajor printing cash at $100 crude, the rare-earth pick where Beijing hands us a catalyst tomorrow morning, the highest-quality way to own silver's shortage after a 46% crash from the highs, the cybersecurity pure-play the Anthropic report just handed a decade of demand, two long-term energy compounders trading around 30% off their highs, and the Argentina momentum trade near its 52-week high. Each with its horizon label, entry logic, and specific triggers.
